1952년생. 서울대학교와 동 대학원을 졸업하고 비엔나 공과대학에서 수학했다.
15년간의 김수근 문하를 거쳐 1989년 그 자신의 사무소인 이로재를 개설한 그는
한국 건축계에 신선한 바람을 일으킨 4.3그룹의 일원이었으며
새로운 건축교육을 모색하고자 설립된 서울건축학교의 운영위원이기도 하다.
수백당(1998), 웰콤시티(2000), 수졸당(1993) 같은 작품으로 여러 건축상을 수상하였으며,
베이징의 장성 꼬뮨 프로젝트에 초대되어 클럽하우스와 11채의 설계를 맡은 이래로
중국, 독일, 일본, 아랍에미리트 등지를 무대로 해외작업을 활발히 진행해 오고 있다.
근래에 진행된 서울 근교의 파주출판도시 프로젝트에서는 코디네이터로서
건축지침과 마스터플랜을 기획하고 건설을 총지휘하기도 했다.
저서로는 '빈자의 미학' (1996)과 '지혜의 도시/지혜의건축'(1999), 건축,
사유의 기호(2004), 비움의 구축(2005) 등이 있으며
이들은 사회적으로 영향력 있는 저작으로 자리매김했다.
2002년 베니스비엔날레 일본관의 주참여작가로 초대되었으며
2003년에 펜실베니아 대학교, 2004년에 동경의 갤러리 마,
2005년에 베를린의 아에데스에서 전시회를 가졌다. 2008년 올해에 그는
베니스 비엔날레의 한국관 커미셔너로 활동중이다.
2002년에 그의 건축 성과에 대하여 미국건축가 협회는 Honorary Fellowship을
수여하였으며,2002년 건축가로서는 최초로 국립현대미술관의 '올해의 작가'로 선정되어
단독전시를 가졌었다. 서울대학교와 북런던 대학교에 출강했고,
현재는 한국예술종합학교에서 강의하고 있다.

Seung H-Sang, born in 1952, graduated and received his master’s degree from Seoul National University. After working for Kim Swoo-geun he established Iroje Architects & Planners in 1989. In the early 1990s he was a core member of 4.3 Group which had a strong influence on the Korean architectural society, and was a founding member of the Seoul School of Architecture. He has won various prizes with his practice and works such as Subaekdang, Welcomm City, Sujoldang etc, and was invited to participate in the “Commune by the Great Wall” project of Beijing, for which he designed the main club house and 11 villas. Since then, he is currently engaged in numerous projects abroad including China, Germany, Japan and UAE. His most recent large-scale project involves the master plan and coordination of Paju Book City near Seoul. He is also a prolific writer and published books including Beauty of Poverty (1996), City of Wisdom, Architecture of Wisdom (1999), Architecture, Signs of Thought (2004), Structuring Emptiness(2005), etc.. He was the invited architect for the Japan Pavilion and Theme Pavilion at the Eighth Architecture Biennale, Venice, 2002, and held exhibitions at U Penn in 2003, at Gallery Ma, Tokyo in 2004, and at Aedes East Berlin in 2005. This year he is commissioner of Korea Pavilion for Venice Biennale. The American Institute of Architects conferred upon him the title of Honorary Fellow of AIA in 2002. In the same year, he was the first architect to be named Artist of the Year by the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea, where he held a grand solo exhibition.
